Fate /Stay night
Fate /Staynight is a hentai game. Despite of being what you may call "perverted game", this game's plot, character development, depth, passion and degree of emotion is far better than any general game / manga / anime.

As soon as you start the game, your view point is presented by Tohsaka Rin and then your view point goes back to the true main character, Emiya Shiro.

Emiya Shiro is an ordinary high school student. Actually, he is a little more than ordinary. He is insanely honest to his feelings. He speaks words that are in his mind. For an example, if he thinks a girl is pretty, he says so.
While your view point is with Tohsaka Rin, the game explains its background in an extreme detail. It is going to take pages to explain. So, I will try to make it short. In the world of Fate /Staynight, there are Magi (mage). Ever since few decades years ago, seven Magi were chosen and servants (witch's familiar) were summoned. A battle between them would begin for the holy grail that'd grant them one wish. The system clear tells you that Japan is not the only place to obtain the holy grail. Well, actually, it is not the holy grail they are after. It is what's inside of the holy cup. The winner would have the holy water and gain one wish.

Servants are like witch's familiar. But they are far advanced. Servants were once great people. After their demise, they'd turn into holy spirits and be summoned by Magi. Ser vents, too, want the holy grail to have their wish granted, their wish that they couldn't accomplish while they were alive.

There are seven kinds of servants. Saber, Archer, Caster, Lancer, Berserker, Assassin and Rider. Only one of its kind would be summoned by a magi and, when the seven of them are summoned, the battle would officially begin.

Tohsaka Rin summons an archer and Emiya Shiro summons a saber.
You may not like this part. Emiya Shiro's saber is who was once the king Arthur and is also a girl. The game explains why the king Arthur is a girl as side stories.

Emiya's Saber, The King Arthur.
As I said, the game explains why our king Arthur is a girl. And this side story is what takes an important impact on the overall story.
A long time ago, a British king feared that his country was constantly invaded by other races. The country was holding fine so far, but the defenses were failing gradually. They needed a new leader. To be more precious, a hero that's unite their people under one rule and fight against invaders.
The king's newborn child who expected to be the next ruler turned out to be a female, a princess. The king's wizard, Merlin, adviced the king to raise her as a prince. Therefore, the princess was raised as a prince. The princess played her role well. She was good at swordsmanship and had what it took to be a fine king. Although it was a princess, Merlin didn't worry at all. The current king's lordship was weakening and they sought a new king. Many lords gathered at a rock where the Excalibur was pierced into. They tried to pull it out. But none was able to. The lords began to discuss a new way to choose a new king. And then the prince slowly approached the Excalibur and tried to pull it out. But Merlin halted her and told her, "Should you pull this sword, you must expect to abandon being a human."

The prince nodded and pulled it out and the prince stopped aging.
The new king was chosen and a new era was opened. She did a good job at protecting the country. She was involved in every single battle for the country and fought on front line every time. Some invaders began to ask for peace treaty. However, her method to protect her country required sacrifices and her people did not want to accept unnecessary sacrifices.

She was a fine king, but as they kept earning victory for many years, they began to take it for granted. Her people wanted the king to reduce sacrifices, but she showed no will to reduce sacrifices. She firmly believed that sacrifces were required for peace to stand still. Her people slowly isolated their king. Nevertheless she still did her job as the king to fullest.
One Knight said to her, "King Arthur lacks what's needed to be a human." And left. Other knights began to hold disloyalty and the country was eventually divided into two.
The girl, who everyone thought was a man, fought to reunite the country but fell in one of final battles... Right before her death, she became a holy spirit to obtain the holy grail.
The king Arthur was summoned by Emiya Shiro and it was where everything began...

As the story progresses, Emiya Shiro began to see his saber's past through his dreams. Her steel wills to protect and serve her country and how she died. He began to see everything in her past through his dreams. Eventually, Emiya Shiro realizes the reason that his servant wants the holy grail is to erase her existence in history so that, maybe, just maybe, her country might have taken a better leader. Emiya Shiro keeps telling her to have a wish for herself. He believes that she has done enough. She has done so much, but her effect was never repaid. In his eyes, the king Arthur died so miserably that he could cry just for her. However, saber simply refuses to listen to Shiro. The battle between Magi becomes fierce. Few magi have fallen already. The bond between Emiya Shiro and his saber become stronger. At one point, they begin to have feelings for each other. But nothing changes in her mind to erase her existence.

Some twists near and during the last battle Emiya Shiro and Saber realize that the holy grail is not so holy. They found out that it grants wishes in exchange of others' sake. They defeat the final servant and its magi and Emiya Shiro asks saber to destroy the holy grail. She complies. The holy grail is destroyed and soon saber would disappear and go back to her time to face her true demise. Emiya Shiro and saber went through a lot. They've even slept together few times. They see twilight sky together... Arthur turns around to face Shiro and tells him, "I loved you." and disappears.
Shiro weakly laughs.

Arthur returns to her time right before her death. She is being carried on back of a horse. A knight is trying to get her to safety. She tells him that she had some kind of dream. When the knight puts his king against a tree, she orders the knight to throw her Excalibur into nearby pond. The knight knew what she meant. It would mean destroying the sword and destroying his king together. He refuses to destroy the sword and falsely reports back to the king and he sunk the sword into the pond. The king smiles weakly and tells him, "comply."
At 3rd time, he finally sinks the sword into the pond and returns to the king.
King Arthur smiles weakly and tells him, "I think I will sleep much longer this time...."

- This is an end of a (first) route in this game. There are other routes.

Fate/Stay Night is one of my favorite visual novels of all time. It was translated into english by Mirrormoon like 1-2 years ago. http://mirrormoon.or...fate_stay_night

I really like the storytelling in this visual novel. The narration is always intense at important times. It's something you can't show in a manga or anime. It's hard to explain. But just trust me when I say the narration in the visual novel is way better then the manga and anime.

The hentai is just a bonus and it doesn't have to be there. Does hurt or help the story in any way. All 3 routes in the game are written very very well. The first route is your typical good route. 2nd has a few surprises here and was more intense. The 3rd route was the most surprising route of them all. All 3 routes were told really well.

Anyone who's looking for a good book or novel to read, I strongly recommend this novel.
